A Love Letter to the Paradox of Independence + Interdependence
with an invitation to make & savor homegrown, ground tortillas with us!
Inspired by the luminous Glennon Doyle:
250 years later, what is Independence Day?
The Declaration of Independence was
a bold break-up letter overthrowing tyranny
as well as a love letter
to collective power resisting authoritarian rule
courageously cultivating mutual flourishing
beyond what they had known.
Friends, as we witness
such unapologetic violence and intimidation
history reminds us
that authoritarian regimes scapegoat the most marginalized among us.
As such unchecked abuses of power terrorize our beloved
immigrant
queer
Muslim
and brown neighbors
we know:
What befalls any of us
Befalls all of us.
As fraught as the American experiment is,
dissent in the spirit of cultivating deeper belonging
is the thread connecting our
founding fathers
abolitionists
suffragists
civil rights leaders
you and I
and us all.
What is liberty but the love of lives beyond our own?
This Independence Day
let us lean into the
paradox of independence and interdependence:
All of us need all of us.
And Friends, after 12 years of selling seeds, Fruition has committed to cultivating gift economy, sharing seeds as relational, intergenerational, exquisite gifts:
too heart-broken to continue selling our kin and
so utterly in love with seeds
we devote ourselves to the magic of shared abundance, risk, life and love.
Why not democracy, too?
We could not do this without you
and here you are.
Thank you 💛
Would you take this next breath with me, the deepest you’ve breathed all day?
Here on the farm, a numberless ocean of seeds are maturing around us, each one adapting to our rapidly changing climate, all to be shared together for generations to come.
Here, celadon orbs of onion:
Here, the emerald pods of poppy:
Here, the fragrant altars, the spheres of coriander:
As tomatoes ripen, squash blossoms, pole beans climb and lettuce, too, rises (below!) to the sky professing a thousand yellow flowers, a thousand thousand possibilities for new worlds becoming inside the one we already know.
When we forget, the earth remembers.
We pledge allegiance to the Earth
to life and death so nourishing.
And for the future, we humbly tend
InterBeing
Indivisible
with belonging and ripe berries for all.
When my heart yearns for what I haven’t yet remembered, fruit and poetry are some of the finests gifts of July.
How to Build a Tree
Sometimes your next
haulting step
is more powerful
than the grandest vision.
All a leaf knows
about building a tree
is to turn toward the light.
James Pearson
What else can we sow now?
So(w) much!
Join us, Friends!
Grind & Unwind:
A Summer Taco & Polenta Potluck
Sunday July 13 | 4 to 8 pm | at Fruition Seeds
Rain or shine, let's make tortillas and polenta and share a potluck together! All are welcome and bring your favorite polenta and tortilla toppings, we'll be grinding a new variety of corn Fruition is co-adapting alongside, making tortillas and polenta aplenty for all. Fireflies will join us as the sun sets.
Also, our beloveds Evan and Erika are visiting from Vermont, bringing a taste of their Corn Flow that deeply nourished Fruition's commitment to gift culture, so let’s talk, practice and savor sustaining culture as well as corn with us💛
Let us gift you seeds & garlic, Friends!
We’ll be sharing summer and autumn sown seeds
at our many gatherings throughout the summer:
And we’ll be sharing garlic at one celebratory gathering, exact date TBD, determined by the garlic themselves. Depending when our Italy Hill Giant Ivory garlic fully matures, we’ll be lifting and gifting garlic together either
Saturday, July 19th (stay for Shakespeare’s The Tempest on the farm in the evening!) or Sunday, July 27th, either day we’ll lift and share garlic from 10 to 4.
Stay tuned & see you soon!
And thank you to the many marvelous hearts & hands who have already joined us this season!
Work Party: Becoming Good Soil Together
Sundays in July: 13th, 20th & 27th as well as all Mondays in July from 10 to 5 pm
Bring your family and friends as we dig into meaningful work on the farm together! We'll share a diversity of activities honoring the many ways we all can learn, laugh and be of service together. Rain or shine, arrive / depart anytime and come ready to be comfortable in changing weather. Bring a dairy-free potluck lunch offering as well as a bag to bring home abundance from the farm 💛
If you're reasonably regional and would love to receive lil text invitations to (un)official work parties and abundance sharing here on the farm, send a sweet ask of an email to petra (at) fruitionseeds.com with your phone number. See you soon!
As raspberries ripen and indigo buntings sing,
let us remember that we sow new worlds as
we cultivate gift culture together!
Have you seen our relational, material & financial needs?
And Friends, we vision a world where we all are ‘sustained’ rather than ‘paid,’ as our beloved Friend Adam Wilson so bravely articulates…
…and if you’d love to sustain our lives more directly, we’re so honored:
May you always feel how interdependent our gardens, lives and love are, Friends.
